Now, Henry, you know better. This is just some trivial morality thing. It's not as if we're talking about some Nuevo Herald employee who was also working (for a salary, no less) for Radio Marti to get the truth (I mean, "propaganda") to Cuba. If that were the case, then of course he/she would deserve no quarter or consideration.
Corral is a very different creature, what with his "ecclesiastical" view of journalism and all (I wonder how ecclesiastical his wife finds this affair, but I suppose that's idle speculation). You can't possibly expect the same standards applied to him as to those Nuevo propagandists. After all, they threatened to sully the pristine purity of the holy Herald, which couldn't do a wrong thing if it tried (it should really be called the Herald Angel, but modesty forbids).
So no, Corral's not one of "those Cubans," but a very good little Cuban. If you want expert confirmation, ask Ana Menendez, a prime specimen of the species. I expect even Carl Hiaasen might find her and Corral acceptable, or at least bearable, despite their unfortunate ethnic background.
You know how it is; all Cubans are equal, but some are more equal than others. Membership (or assimilation of a certain sort) has its rewards. So does prostitution, come to think of it, but let's not dwell in the gutter.
Will other South Florida media cover it? You mean like Nuevo Herald, which should be on this like white on rice for reasons too obvious to mention? I would be quite surprised (unless the other Herald were to run something about the trial, in which case Nuevo Herald would probably run a simple translation, as it did with mini-notice of the arrest).
New Times may run something, but I doubt there's much in it for them, and it seems rather unlikely the SunPost would pursue this after its exceedingly Corral-friendly cover story not long ago (besides, it just won't do to give "those Cubans" the satisfaction).
Of course, if Corral wound up acquitted (as opposed to a plea bargain or some such, let alone an undiluted conviction), that would change things considerably. THEN there would almost certainly be coverage. I can see the headline: "The Vindication of Ecclesiastes."
So what happened at the hearing yesterday? Of course there's no word on it in either Herald today.
I was not able to attend the hearing. The Clerk of the Court's web site has not updated the disposition of his case. I suspect it will be anti-climactic. He'll probably get some sort of pre-trial diversion which will allow him to avoid a technical conviction based on a first time offense and the nature of the offense. But I'll keep checking.
This being a first-time offense as far as the justice system is concerned does not necessarily mean that it's the first time it's been committed. That is a separate question. Of course there has to be a first time for anything, but this may or may not be it. Needless to say, countless acts involving prostitution take place without detection by police or any other authority.
I was speaking from a legal standpoint.
Still nothing in the Heralds four days after the hearing. If a tree falls in the forest...
It's a question of morality and credibility for cub reporter Oscar Corral, who initially vowed that he was "innocent" and wanted his "day in court."
Any word on the outcome of last Thursday's hearing, since the ever-so-"investigative" Herald apparently won't touch this?
