Herald Ombudsman takes professorship at Harvard

From Editor & Publisher:

Edward Schumacher-Matos, The Miami Herald's ombudsman, has been named Robert F. Kennedy Visiting Professor for Latin American Studies at the Harvard University David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies...

A native of Colombia, Schumacher-Matos, will teach a graduate seminar on Hispanics and illegal immigration as the RFK visiting professor. He is also writing a book on the subject.

The article does not state if Schumacher-Matos will continue on at the Herald.

I'm tempted to say more, but what's the point? Well, I suppose the ombudsman bit was something to do, or pretend to do, while waiting for something better to come along. Of course, one can't really blame the guy. I seriously doubt the Herald was ever serious about policing itself. I'm not sure any newspaper really is, certainly not in a way that's exposed and open to the public.

Schumacher Matos has only a master's degree in international economics and politics from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. You can't even get hired to teach in a junior college unless you have a Ph.D. It's obvious Schumacher Matos has a friend who greased his skids for a year or two.
