I've mentioned several times that the Herald's parent company's (McClatchy) share price was in a race to zero. Today a reader notified me that the price was at 75 cents. In March of 2005 the price was 100 times that amount ($74.80). Of course that was before McClatchy acquired the Miami Herald and other troubled newspapers from Knight-Ridder. The company's stock will soon be worthless.

The NYT had another plagiarism issue, this time the reporter, Alexei Barrionuevo, was caught lifting direct copy from the Miami Herald. It's a real indictment on the Times that of all of the newspapers its reporter might plagiarize he chose the Miami Herald. That's like cheating off of the dumbest guy in the class.

Odious Miami Herald columnist, Ana Menendez was a finalist for a National Journalism Award from the Scripps Howard news service. If Ana Menendez is considered as a paragon of journalism then my opinion of the profession just went down dramatically. At least she didn't win.

Editor & Publisher has published a story about the Herald's new comment registration policy. They direct our attention to a letter to readers by TMH Executive Editor Anders Gyllenhaal about the subject. He admits that requiring registration to comment was a long time coming but that it wasn't implemented for technical reasons. It seems to me that it couldn't be that difficult to implement.The

At long last Herald.com is requiring users to be logged in to post comments to news articles. Previously, anyone could post a comment anonymously or use a fake or assumed name. Now at least one needs to register with a functional email address. While this won't completely eliminate the hateful and ridiculous comments it should reduce them significantly.

The Miami Herald has once again decided that it needs to have a blog about Cuban issues. The new entry is called "Cuban Colada" and is manned by journos from both TMH and ENH such as Pablo Bachelet, Alfonso Chardy, John Dorschner, Jordan Levin, Renato Pérez Pizarro, and Frances Robles. Unless I'm mistaken, I thought I saw this blog once before but the archives only go back a few days.

Herald Watch has received an email from Latino Studies professor Antonio de la Cova Ph.D. in which he alleges that The Miami Herald used certain materials that it obtained from his web site without attribution.The article in question is about Gerald Patrick Hemming, a man who the Herald's John Dorschner describes as an "adventurer" who died last week.
